About The Neuravive Treatment

What is The Neuravive Treatment?

Neuravive is an incisionless treatment for essential tremor patients who have not responded to medication. It is based on MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) technology which uses sound energy to precisely treat deep in the brain guided by MR imaging.

Ultrasound is a form of energy that passes through skin, muscle, fat and bone without the need for incisions, permanent implants or inserted probes.  Ultrasound energy is non-ionizing, meaning the patient is not being exposed to radiation during the procedure. When ultrasound energy is focused on a small target the tissue temperature of the target tissue is raised high enough to destroy it, providing a therapeutic effect.

During the Neuravive procedure, ultrasound waves pass safely through the skull without a need for an incision.  These ultrasound waves are focused on a small spot in the brain (Vim nucleus of the thalamus), considered to be responsible for causing tremor, to create a tiny ablation or burn. For many patients, the result is immediate improvement in their hand tremor with minimal complications.

The treatment is performed in an MRI suite, often on an outpatient basis. The MRI is the eyes of the treatment, enabling the physician to plan and guide the treatment. MRI also acts like a thermometer, providing continuous temperature monitoring to verify that only the targeted tissue is destroyed.

In clinical studies, patients reported an immediate and significant improvement in tremor immediately following treatment.

The focused ultrasound treatment is capable of penetrating the skull without making an incision. There is no need for anesthesia and the patient is completely conscious during treatment.

Since the treatment is non-invasive, it can be performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning minimal hospitalization is needed. You can expect to resume normal activities within days.

Safe and effective with minimal side effects.

After a single treatment, most patients report a significant relief from symptoms almost immediately.  They can return to normal daily activities, such as drinking, eating and writing, on their own.

Neuravive - Possible Risks and Side Effects:

Be sure to discuss with your physician all the risks involved with the Neuravive treatment. In general, the side effects of the Neuravive treatment are minimal, but as with any medical procedure, there are risks.

During the treatment you may experience dizziness, pain, nausea or other sensations

Temporary or permanent muscle weakness, gait disturbances or sensory effects (tingling, numbness) in your fingers or elsewhere may occur in your body.

There is the possibility that your tremor may return some months or years after treatment.

Temporary or permanent muscle weakness, gait disturbances or sensory effects (tingling, numbness) in your fingers or elsewhere in your body.

This procedure does not treat the underlying disease nor prevent the exacerbation or progression of the disease.

If you experience a blood clot after the procedure that is not treated quickly, you may have long term related complications, such as muscle, heart, brain or lung damage.
